"Below the Thunders of the Upper Deep": The Visibility and Invisibility of New Zealand Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror New Zealand authors write a lot of speculative fiction – that is, science fiction, fantasy and horror. But because much of it is published overseas, that often goes unnoticed. This relative invisibility extends to NZ authors who have had major overseas success, such as Nalini Singh. In recent years, NZ literary fiction authors and publishers have become more receptive to speculative fiction - with the success of Elizabeth Knox's fantasy and horror novels serving as a beacon. But the divide between "literary" and "genre" speculative fiction remains. This paper looks at the state of the field. Biography Tim Jones was awarded the New Zealand Society of Authors Janet Frame Memorial Award for Literature in 2010. His books include his second short story collection Transported (Vintage, 2008), poetry anthology The Stars Like Sand: Australian Speculative Poetry, co-edited with P. S. Cottier Interactive Press, 2014), and his fourth poetry collection, New Sea Land (Mākaro Press, 2016). Tim's short fiction has appeared in Best New Zealand Fiction 4 (2007), The Penguin Book of Contemporary New Zealand Short Stories (2009), and The Apex Book of World SF 2 (2012). He is currently teaching two Writing Short Fiction courses at Whitireia Polytechnic. |
