About the Dan Davin Literary FoundationThe Dan Davin Literary Foundation follows the Davin tradition of supporting and promoting New Zealand writers and writing.
In 1994, the Trust Bank Southland Community Trust Inc. (now The Community Trust of Southland) purchased a bust of Dan Davin, by sculptor, Anthony Stones (1934 - 2016) The purchase coincided with an exhibition of Stones' work at the Southland Museum and Art Gallery in the same year. In 1995, the first Dan Davin short story competition was held. Gareth Lyness of James Hargest High School was the winner with his contribution, The Team From the Community Trust's original initiative, the Dan Davin Literary Foundation continues to look at further ways to support and promote creative writing in Southland and the wider region. In 2020, the Trust launched the inaugural Southland Writers and Readers Festival to showcase and celebrate our local writers. Local writers, including Pauline Smith (Author of Dawn Raid) and children's book author Kyle Mewburn. The feature event was afternoon tea with Trust patron, writer and poet, Dr Cilla McQueen. |
