The Dan Davin Literary Foundation follows the Davin tradition of supporting and promoting New Zealand writers and writing.
Dan Davin, born and raised in Southland, was a scholar, writer and academic publisher with Oxford University Press, a position he held for over 30 years.
In 1994, the Trust Bank Community Trust Inc. (now the Community Trust of Southland) purchased the 1983 Dan Davin sculpture by artist Anthony Stones.
The purchase was the catalyst for an exhibition of Stones' work at the Southland Museum and Art Gallery in the same year.
The Dan Davin Literary Foundation continues to support and promote creative writing in Southland. This was originally via the annual student writing workshops and Dan Davin Award short story writing competition. The success of the student award has led to an adult Dan Davin Award including historical writing in 2006, poetry in 2008 and short story in 2009. Poetry was once again the genre for the 2010 awards, with 2011 genre short story.
