Dan Davin Awards & Writing Workshops
The Dan Davin Literary Foundation holds annual workshops and short story writing awards for students in the Community Trust of Southland region, which includes Southland, Queenstown/Wakatipu and Tapanui. Currently the awards are for Year 12 and 13 students whose home or school is in this region.
It also holds an adult award, usually in short story although the genre does change from time to time and has encompassed poetry, short story and historical writing in the past.

Student Writing Workshops
In 2011, to coincide with NZ Book Month, we held the writing workshops in March.
Historically, the student writing workshops were held in May, with the short story writing competition closing at the end of July for judging. The awards are held each September.
This year's annual student writing workshop was led by award winning writer, Helen Lowe. Helen is a fiction writer, poet and broadcaster. Her writing has appeared in journals, magazines and in print and online anthologies. She has won awards for her fiction and poetry and her first novel Thornspell (2008) garnered significant recognition in New Zealand and in the USA. Thornspell was selected as a Storylines New Zealand Children's Literature Trust Notable Book (2008), and won the Sir Julius Vogel Award (2009) for Best Novel, Young Adult. Helen herself won the Sir Julius Vogel award for Best New Talent, also in 2009.
Extension of Writing Workshop and Competition Activities
More recently, the Foundation has extended its role from hosting student awards and workshops to oppotunities for adults interested in creative writing. In 2006 the inaugural Dan Davin Award for adults was an historic fiction story, won by published poet and writer, Kay McKenzie Cooke. Changing genres for 2008 saw over one hundred entrants submit poems which were judged by poet and academic editor, Richard Reeve.
2009 saw the short story chosen for the adult writing competition. Over forty entries were received for the adult competition and twenty five for the student competition. Leading short story writer, Owen Marshall was the workshop leader and judge.
In 2010, workshops across a range of genres, including poetry, short story, graphic novel, film/script-writing and journalism were developed.
For more details on the range of writing workshops offered in 2011, visit our Readers & Writers Alive! Events page. Planning is already underway for Readers & Writers Alive! in 2012.
